Academic drawing occupies a leading place in the creative heritage of Russian artists. Their skill in sketching clearly demonstrates respect for nature, which allowed each of them to find their own artistic style. The article provides a brief retrospective analysis of the Russian academic school of drawing at various stages of its development. It should be noted that the foundation on which the modern system of art education is built is the methodological basis for teaching academic drawing, including the principles and theoretical provisions developed by Russian artists. They determine the overall structure and content of the educational process, which allows to choose the optimal ways and methods of teaching aimed at achieving the educational goals. The problems of analysing the pedagogical and methodological aspects of art and aesthetic education in the process of academic drawing still remain undiscovered. It concerns the methodological aspects of teaching academic drawing at different stages of its development, from the time of the formation of the Russian academic art school to the present. In the context of academic art education, the article examines the combination of traditional and innovative teaching methods in the field of drawing.
