With the popularization of the Internet, network buzzwords have become an indispensable part of cross-cultural communication. Because of its cultural uniqueness and timeliness, Chinese network buzzwords have become an important carrier of cross-cultural communication. However, the cultural differences between high- and low-contexts lead to the phenomenon that words fail to convey meaning in the process of translating Chinese Internet buzzwords into English. In addition, the partially entertaining translations by users (such as transliteration) have brought the joy of creating language to netizens, while also enriching the form and content of English. Although they reflect the specific views and positions of the masses, they also affect the effectiveness of cross-cultural communication. Based on the theory of sociolinguistics, this study concerns cross-cultural communication of Chinese online buzzwords, analyses the pros and cons brought about by different English translation methods, and arrives at the conclusion that flexibly selecting appropriate English translation strategies is of paramount importance for enhancing the effectiveness of communication.
