The paper analyses V.F. Odoevsky’s views on the history of Russia in the context of the civilizational approach. The relevance of the research results from the fact that Russian literature and philosophy of the 19th century are actively used to form the modern Russian worldview according to the 2021 Russian National Security Strategy, and the concept of Russia as a state-civilization is reflected in the new «Fundamentals of Russian Statehood» academic discipline of the higher school. The author shows that the lack of clear definition of the “state-civilization” concept does not allow us to unambiguously determine the place of V.F. Odoevsky in the formation of the civilizational approach. The analysis allows us to conclude that when using a distinctive feature of civilization, the untranslatability of basic intuitions into other languages and cultures of Russia, according to V.F. Odoevsky, belongs to the European civilization
