The study aims to identify the specific features of the aesthetics of the comic and its functions in A. and B. Strugatsky’s novella “Monday Begins on Saturday”. The paper analyzes the comic element and its types (satire, humor, irony), through which the artistic whole of the work is completed at all structural levels: at the level of plot construction, the system of images, narrative strategies, and compositional organization. The paper is original in that it is the first one in Russian literary studies to give a holistic interpretation of the novella “Monday Begins on Saturday” by considering the aesthetics of the comic. In addition, the organic relationship between the two types of fantastic imagery found in the novella is revealed: magical-fairy tale and scientific. As a result, it was found that the comic element, permeating all the structural elements of the novella, turns out to be the productive aesthetic point of view that reveals new relationships between the characters with each other, with society, with literature, with culture, and with the future in the fantastic prose of the Strugatsky brothers of the 1960s.
