Pharmacognosy is one of the basic pharmaceutical sciences studied by students of the speciality «Pharmacy» at the Medical Institute of Petrozavodsk State University in the Republic of Karelia. The laboratory of the Department of Botany and Plant Physiology has a collection of medicinal plant raw materials, herbarium of medicinal plants, a set of chemical reagents, equipment for qualitative and quantitative analysis of raw materials for training sessions. At the department students of the directions «Biology» and «Ecology and Nature Management» carry out ecological and biological research of widely spread wild species of plants in Karelia. These plant species are used in folk medicine. Students analyze the resources of species of medicinal plants, conduct harvesting of medicinal raw materials, macroscopic, microscopic and phytochemical analysis of raw materials. In their work they use normative documents and methods adopted in the study of pharmacognosy. In laboratory classes in the discipline “Experimental Ecology” students of the direction «Ecology and Nature Management» master the skills of microscopic and phytochemical analysis of medicinal plant raw materials. In the course «Rational Nature Management» students are familiarized with measures for the protection and rational harvesting of medicinal raw materials.
