Language shapes human perceptions and interactions with the environment, either fostering its preservation or contributing to its destruction. Several studies highlight the role of language in shaping environmental awareness, yet the linguistic mechanisms underlying these influences remain underexplored in literary discourse. This study examines The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak through the lens of Arran Stibbe’s ecolinguistics theory, focusing on how language constructs narratives about nature and human-environment relationships. Using a qualitative approach, the study analyzes core elements of linguistics: 1) ideology, 2) framing, 3) metaphor, 4) evaluation, 5) identity, 6) conviction, 7) salience, and 8) erasure to reveal the novel’s ecological discourse. Shafak employs magical realism to provide deep insights into the lives of trees and their interconnectedness with humans, fruit bats, butterflies, and other creatures. Through historical and mythological references, she underscores the intricate relationship between humans and nature while critiquing destructive activities such as deforestation, mining, and war. Findings suggest that trees, animals, and insects in “The Island of Missing Trees” manifested as sentient beings that contribute to ecological balance. The novel promotes an alternative narrative where trees are intelligent, resilient, and vital to environmental sustainability. Overall, the novel’s discourse encourages a shift towards language that fosters ecological awareness. Based on these findings, this study advocates for the conscious use of environmentally responsible language, particularly by individuals in influential roles such as journalists, politicians, and writers.
