Motivation: Quantitative regional pulmonary blood flow (PBF) is a diagnostically useful parameter since in the lungs regional perfusion is regulated by hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction. Goal(s): Due to the high costs of gadolinium-based contrast agents and safety issues contrast-free imaging technique such as arterial spin labelling (ASL) is interesting, especially for repeated measurements or applications in children. Approach: In this study, we aim to develop a robust velocity selective ASL (VSASL) sequence with unbalanced steady-state free-precession (ubSSFP)-readout for free-breathing perfusion measurement of the lung parenchyma. Results: This study shows the feasibility of non-contrast free-breathing pulmonary perfusion imaging using VSASL. Impact: This study developed a robust VSASL sequence with unbalanced steady-state free-precession (ubSSFP)-readout for free-breathing perfusion measurement of the lung parenchyma. The approach remains to be applied and examined further in patients with lung disease.
