Skills are developed through practice and the refinement of abilities necessary for the successful performance of activities. The intention to learn activates cognitive processes that enable effective learning and memory. The aim of this research is to determine the characteristics of the connection between students’ academic achievement in the Serbian language and their work habits and level of achievement motivation. Descriptive research method was used, together with scaling as data collection technique. The sample included a total of 600 seventh-grade students. Based on the presented results, it should be emphasized that all items from the work habits questionnaire are statistically significantly positively correlated with students’ achievement in the Serbian language. Accordingly, the composite score of work habits is also statistically significantly positively associated with the grade in Serbian language. The correlation is of moderate intensity and statistically significant at the level of p < 0.01. It can be concluded that the more developed the work habits, the higher the grade in Serbian language. When it comes to students’ achievement motivation and its connection with their grades, a low but still statistically significant correlation is observed. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that students’ work habits are more important predictors of academic success than their achievement motivation.
