Cultural genes identification and adaptive use of railway heritage: a case study based on Zhengtai Railway (Shijiazhuang section)

Railway heritage represents a dynamic and multifaceted cultural system, serving both as a material carrier and a historical witness to railway culture. Identifying the intrinsic cultural genes embedded within railway heritage and understanding their hierarchical structure is crucial for effective preservation and adaptive reuse. This study proposes a systematic approach to the identification, deconstruction, and reconstruction of railway heritage's cultural genes. Using the Zhengtai Railway (Shijiazhuang section) as a case study, we employ a structured methodological framework to extract and classify both explicit and implicit cultures. The research integrates clustering analysis with grounded theory to uncover the underlying structure and interconnections of Zhengtai Railway's cultural heritage. The findings reveal that its explicit cultural genes are multi-faceted in spatial environment, primary relics, linear remains, and transportation activities, while its implicit cultural genes encompass historical narratives, spiritual significance, regional characteristics, and social revitalization. Based on these insights, this study proposes a comprehensive strategy for the revitalization and utilization of railway heritage, emphasizing heritage protection mechanisms, the co-creation of cultural value, and enhanced experiential engagement. This research provides a methodological reference for the identification and adaptive reuse of railway heritage, contributing to broader discussions on cultural heritage conservation and sustainable urban development.
