Point-of-care testing (POCT) allows rapid diagnostic tests to be performeddirectly near the patient to influence medical decision-making. POCT gainedprominence during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in hospital emergencydepartments, primary care and outpatient settings. Tests such as glucose,CRP and pregnancy tests provide results in just minutes, speeding up thediagnosis and treatment process. Despite benefits, such as reduced antibioticuse and improved patient satisfaction, POCT faces challenges, including a lackof uniform regulation, limited sensitivity of some tests and implementationcosts. Further potential is seen for the use of POCT in primary care, particularlyin screening tests, optimizing the diagnostic process and developingmultiparameter tests, which could revolutionize diagnosis and improve thequality of medical care.
