186 Disability due to injury among the adolescents in Bangladesh- a national survey findings

Every single disability is a long-term burden for any nation. In Bangladesh adolescent disability is a concern issue and there is a lack of studies on adolescent disability due to injury. Bangladesh Health and Injury Survey data was analyzed to explain the magnitude of disability due to injury among the adolescents in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Health and Injury Survey was a national cross-sectional survey conducted during March- June 2016 among 299,216 rural and urban inhabitants. 56 disability occurred due to injury were found in this study, among them 82.1% (n=46) were male and 17.9% (n=10) were female. Annual rate was 91.66 (95% CI 69.9- 118.2) per 100,000 adolescents. Of all 3.6% (n=2) and 96.4% (n=54) were from the urban and rural areas respectively. Among the person with disability 28.6% (n=16) were in the age category 10–14 years and 71.4% (n=40) were in the age category of 15–19 years. Fall injury accounted for 28.6% (n=16) of disability whereas road traffic injury 28.6% (n=16), cut 714.3% (n=8), machine 10.7% (n=6), electrocution 10.7% (n=6), injury by animal 3.6% (n=2), violence 3.6% (n=2) respectively. Among the injured 42.9% (n=24) physically disability with hand, 39.3% (n=22) lost mobility, 7.1% (n=4) lost vision and 10.7% (n=6) other types of disability. Among the disabled 17.6% (n=82) were children and 82.6% (n=384) were adults. Mean number of days needed support from others were 53.89 (SD +38.4) days. Annually a significant number of adolescents became disabled in Bangladesh due to injury. Researcher and policy makers should design measures for minimizing this preventable burden of disability among adolescents.
