Purpose This paper aims to present Morocco's main situation in terms of literacy and illiteracy rates and how public libraries can assist in the development of literacy and education. Design/methodology/approach The research collected data and statistics available on the Ministry of Education's website, as well as a literature review of the existing research in this regard. Findings Data shows a lack of support in the field of education and adult literacy and limited access to library services. Originality/value The current study is the first and unique one to provide data and analyses on the literacy situation in Morocco.
