This article explores the prospects and features of the border territories on the example of Kazakhstan and the XUAR. The main purpose of the study is to analyze and the degree of prospects for establishing and expanding cross-border trade, economic, scientific, technical, socio-cultural cooperation in the border area. The methodology includes analysis of development programs, statistical data and expert assessments, as well as interviews with representatives of government and academia in the specified areas. The main objectives of the study include the analysis of the current state of the border areas, the activities of special economic zones and the potential of the FEZ “ICBC “Khorgos” In the course of the work, the novelty of the article was revealed – New statistical data on the areas collected locally allow for a more flexible approach to predicting the future development of selected areas. The results of the study make it possible to better demonstrate the dynamism of cooperation and trace the involvement of the population in economic processes.
