Cancers of the oral cavity are common worldwide, with incidence rates and trends varying significantly between different regions. Globally, approximately 378,000 cases were diagnosed with 178,000 deaths in 2020.1 In the United States, the estimated annual incidence of oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) is reported to have decreased from 3.78 per 100,000 in 2001 to 3.54 per 100,000 in 2017.2 Historically, oral cavity and pharynx cancer incidence significantly declined in the U.S. between 1995 and 2004, with an annual percent change of -1.5%.
