Objective of the study is to analyse the functions of art (visual activity) in the most archaic period of its existence (Upper Palaeolithic, Neolithic). The methodological basis of the research is based on the functional method and also includes the use of historical and comparative methods. Results of the study. The analysis of ancient pictorial activity suggests that at the Palaeolithic and Neolithic stage of its development the aesthetic function was not determinant. At this stage, human visual activity had mainly ritual significance. Works of ancient art, as well as early examples of monumental architecture, allow us to assert that their function was not just the creation of visual representation of some mythological content, but direct inclusion in ritual practices. Works of ancient art served as conductors or receptacles of the sacred, provided ritual modification of reality. The separation of the aesthetic function proper from the ritual function occurs at later stages of the development of ancient art, and this process can be the subject of further research. Research рerspectives. This work will be useful for finding new theoretical approaches in the study of art, as well as in determining the functions of art at an early stage of its development.
