Our kid narrator is hungry for some ice cream, which quantum physicist mother is happy to provide after putting the finishing touches on her latest and greatest invention: a device that reveals other dimensions. Ever the maximalist, kiddo is enamored by a dimension where everything is ice cream and accidentally taps the device's screen. This initiates a launch sequence; turns out, the device doesn't just show dimensions, it travels to them. Mother and child are soon off on a dimension-hopping quest to worlds made entirely of bowls, solely of spoons, and then overflowing with various toppings to complete their ultimate sundaes. There's a delightfully madcap, Magic School Bus energy behind this premise (with admittedly less educational heft) as a simple trip for ice cream transforms into an out-of-this-world, sci-fi adventure. Pizza's art is energetic and so rounded it seems squishy, with curvy lines and squiggles in both character design and backgrounds. Pencil scribbles add texture to the layered gouache, and the goofy smiles that abound on everything from spoons to gummy worms to the narrator can't help but make viewers grin. Fans of the first book will spy the pizza dimension from its particle-accelerator conclusion, but they'll have a feast of new food worlds to dream about as well.
