Industrial production is the basic pillar of economy and its development is essential for achieving economic growth, employment, innovation and competitiveness.The current development not only in the European but also in global space has confronted the European industrial production with many risks and challenges, not only in connection with efforts to maintain its competitiveness, but especially in ensuring the requirements of sustainable development.The article is focused on evaluating the status of industrial production in the EU and selected aspects of its sustainable development.In addition to the structural characteristics, attention is paid to the efficiency of the transformation of environmental and energy indicators of the industry into the economic level of the EU countries using the DEA approach.Bottlenecks of industrial production are identified and possible solutions are indicated.
