Abstract Purpose: Colon cancer poses a significant public health burden, reflected in high hospitalization rates and substantial healthcare costs. This study analyzes the economic impact and demographic profile of public hospital admissions for colon cancer in Brazil from 2019 to 2023, focusing on variations by region, age, race, and type of care. Methods: We conducted a descriptive analysis of hospital admission data for colon cancer obtained from the Brazilian Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS). Indicators included hospital costs, number of admissions, patient demographics, care type (elective or emergency), and regional distribution. Results: Between 2019 and 2023, Brazil registered 283, 124 hospitalizations for colon cancer, with a total cost of R 568. 16 million. The Southeast region accounted for the highest number of admissions (125, 773) and total costs (R 274. 30 million). Hospitalizations were more frequent among patients aged 60–69 years (86, 224 admissions), and emergency care accounted for 58. 4% of cases. Regarding race, white individuals represented the majority of hospitalizations (157, 999 cases), followed by pardo individuals (87, 471 cases). Admissions were evenly distributed between sexes, with 140, 662 male and 142, 462 female patients. The mortality rate was 8. 05%, and the average length of stay was 4. 9 days. Conclusion: This study highlights the substantial economic and healthcare burden of colon cancer in Brazil, particularly in the Southeast region. The findings emphasize the importance of preventive measures, early diagnosis, and tailored interventions to address regional and demographic disparities effectively. Citation Format: Ana C.
