Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools have become widely available in recent years. GenAI raises important questions for the practice of qualitative research in psychology, particularly in relation to the ethical and transparent use of GenAI in research conduct and reporting. To explore current perspectives of researchers on this shift in widespread availability of GenAI, we report on the responses of 100 qualitative researchers to a qualitative survey. The themes generated using reflexive thematic analysis explore concerns for research quality, imaginings of new expectations for research practice, and further clarify values for qualitative research in the age of AI. This paper aims to reflect on what the new availability of GenAI can clarify about the values and disciplinary expectations for qualitative research in psychology. We make further recommendations for supporting qualitative researchers and clarifying disciplinary views through this technological advancement.
