Purpose This study aims to evaluate the strategic viability of crowdfunding as an alternative financing mechanism in Qatar using a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis framework. The objective is to provide a structured assessment of the key internal and external factors influencing the implementation and growth of crowdfunding platforms within the unique context of the Qatar financial ecosystem. Design/methodology/approach The research adopts a conceptual methodology, synthesizing secondary data from academic literature, industry reports, and case studies of successful crowdfunding initiatives in comparable markets. The SWOT framework is used to systematically evaluate the sector's strengths, opportunities and threats, with analysis structured to capture both enabling factors and potential barriers to growth. Findings The analysis reveals that the strengths of Qatar's crowdfunding sector include a supportive regulatory environment and high technological readiness, which provide a strong foundation for platform growth. However, the sector faces significant weaknesses, such as limited public awareness and low investor confidence. Opportunities are identified in the country's growing entrepreneurial culture and correspondence with national development goals, while threats include regulatory uncertainties and the risk of increased competition from traditional financing sources. Research limitations/implications The primary limitation of this research lies in its reliance on secondary data sources, which may not capture real-time developments in the Qatari market. Additionally, the findings are based on the current regulatory and economic context, which is subject to change, potentially impacting the relevance of the conclusions. Practical implications The study offers actionable recommendations for policymakers, financial institutions and entrepreneurs seeking to develop a robust crowdfunding sector in Qatar. Strategies for increasing market awareness, building investor confidence and enhancing regulatory clarity are proposed to support the sustainable growth of crowdfunding platforms. Social implications This research underlines its role in democratizing access to finance, supporting innovation, and nurturing inclusive economic growth. It highlights the social value of expanding financial opportunities for small businesses and startups, contributing to broader economic diversification goals. Originality/value This study contributes to the limited literature on crowdfunding in Qatar by offering a strategic evaluation through a localized SWOT analysis. It provides novel insights into the specific strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that can influence the success of crowdfunding in this under-researched market, thus addressing a critical gap in existing research.
