Discrete manufacturing efforts to complete digital transformation are progressively requiring end-to-end traceability in engineering, supply chain, operations, and finance. The weight of regulatory demands, product recalls, sustainability requirements and customer requirements of transparency means that manufacturers need to create a digital thread a continuous, authoritative connection between information throughout the product life cycle. Virtually every organization has deployed SAP S/4HANA as its digital core but traceability is frequently fragmented in the Order-to-Cash (OTC), Procure-to-Pay (PTP), Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) and Record-to-Report (RTR) process. The present paper provides a template of a standardized SAP S/4HanA digital-threads template of discrete manufacturing which facilitates the identification of part lot/serial levels as well as of the part lot/serial levels in the commercial realm, logistics sphere, manufacturing space, and in the financial sphere. The proposed framework involves linking the master data objects like Bills of Material (BOMs), routings, batches and serial numbers with transactional data like sales orders, production orders, material documents, warehouse operations, deliveries, invoices and universal journal postings. The template is capable of making sure that all physical movements incur financial footprint by matching the operational events with the financial representations of the Universal Journal (ACDOCA). The paper has defined reference process flows which follows a serial component in a path of supplier procurement and then through warehouse receipt, production consumption, finished-goods shipment, customer billing, and period- end financial close. Audit readiness (in the form of compliance checkpoints), recall execution, and regulatory reporting are supported with compliance checkpoints. The quantitative performance metrics show the objective improvement in order cycle time, recall response latency, and audit preparation effort. The suggested template offers a re-purposeable, industry-neutral base of implementing the digital thread based on standard SAP S/4HANA functionality without the use of non-standardized-code.
