Multidisciplinary cardio-obstetrics care, with individualized anesthetic management, is crucial for improving outcomes in pregnant women with heart disease.
Cardiac disease in pregnancy, whether congenital or acquired, is an important cause of maternal mortality and morbidity in India. Appropriate peri-pregnancy multidisciplinary management by a cardio-obstetrics team is essential to improve outcomes. The anesthesiologist is an integral part of this team and is involved in providing analgesia for labor, anesthesia for cesarean delivery, and the management of critically ill patients with cardiac or obstetric complications. The type of anesthesia and the extent of monitoring depends on the type and severity of the cardiac disease and the clinical presentation. It is important to identify high-risk patients early and formulate individualized anesthesia management strategies. This review summarizes the important aspects of the anesthetic care of these patients.
