Abstract: Is home a traumatizing place or a natural refuge where you can find your inner self? Is nature merely a backdrop or an intrinsic part of human identity? Is isolation and loneliness a remedy for social problems or an expression of a hedonistic worldview? These are just some of the questions with which the contemporary makers of neo-Heimat film are grappling. The term neo-Heimat film, coined primarily in the press in the 1990s and 2000s, points to a temporal distance between the new Heimat film productions and those works of the genre's heyday (the late 1940s and early 1950s) as well as to a thematic distance from the anti-Heimat films of the 1970s. Although the term appears in numerous reviews of individual German and Austrian productions, it has neither been defined nor has there been any attempt to systematize individual elements of neo-Heimat films. The aim of this article is to conduct a textual analysis of three recent films: Hochwald (2020), Märzengrund (2022) and Ein ganzes Leben (2023). Using these examples and references to other films, the article attempts to establish and analyse the most important components of the sub-genre. Dies sind nur einige der Fragen, mit denen sich die zeitgenössischen Macher des Neo-Heimatfilms auseinandersetzen. Der vor allem in der Presse der 1990er und 2000er Jahre geprägte Begriff Neo-Heimatfilm verweist auf eine zeitliche Distanz der neuen Heimatfilmproduktionen zu den Werken der Blütezeit des Genres (Ende der 1940er und Anfang der 1950er Jahre) sowie auf eine thematische Distanz zu den Anti-Heimatfilmen der 1970er Jahre. Obwohl der Begriff in zahlreichen Besprechungen einzelner deutscher und österreichischer Produktionen auftaucht, wurde er bisher weder definiert noch wurde der Versuch unternommen, einzelne Elemente des Neo-Heimatfilms zu systematisieren. Ziel dieses Artikels ist es, eine Textanalyse von drei aktuellen Filmen durchzuführen: Hochwald (2020), Märzengrund (2022) und Ein ganzes Leben (2023). Anhand dieser Beispiele und Referenzen zu anderen Filmen wird versucht, die wichtigsten Bestandteile des Subgenres zu identifizieren und analysieren.
