In this powerful book, Lee Hawkins offers a psychohistorical account of his own life in the context of the generations in the United States of his forebears, members of his family who had been enslaved, and those who had been slave owners. I was galvanized reading his memoir. His narrative skills are well-suited to the history he uncovers and analyzes.
