As I write this editorial in my capacity as President of the Indian Society of Periodontology, I do so with a deep sense of gratitude and purpose. Our specialty has travelled a remarkable journey over the years — shaped by science, strengthened by experience, and constantly refined by the changing needs of the patients we serve. This evolution inspires us to look ahead with confidence, while staying rooted in the values and knowledge that define who we are as periodontists. For more than five decades, our Society has stood for academic excellence, ethical practice, and a shared professional spirit that unites us as a fraternity. It is this strong foundation that has enabled us to grow meaningfully over time. In recent years, implant-based rehabilitation has naturally emerged as an extension of periodontal science, built upon the same biological principles that guide our clinical judgment and patient care. The success of implant therapy is inseparable from periodontal understanding — tissue biology, regeneration, biomechanics, disease control, and lifelong maintenance. It is therefore no coincidence that periodontists around the world continue to play a central role in implant-supported care. Our training, perspective, and scientific grounding place us in a unique position to ensure that implant therapy remains biologically sound, evidence-driven, and truly centred on patient wellbeing. At the same time, it is important to reaffirm that Periodontology remains the heart and foundation of our discipline. Even as our scope expands, our core identity does not change. Instead, it grows stronger — because every new frontier we explore is anchored in the principles that have always guided us. This natural progression gives us an opportunity to strengthen our mission further by: Encouraging a more integrated way of thinking, where periodontal and implant sciences support and enrich each other in everyday clinical practice Fostering deeper research collaborations in peri-implant health, regenerative therapies, biomaterials, and emerging digital technologies Strengthening our clinical standards, so that implant practice in India continues to reflect scientific integrity, ethical responsibility, and compassion in care Nurturing our professional identity, grounded in confidence, maturity, and a sense of collective purpose as a specialty. As we move ahead, our responsibility is to preserve the scientific strength of Periodontology while thoughtfully embracing the expanding dimensions of implant-based rehabilitation. This journey does not replace our core identity — it enriches it, giving our specialty renewed meaning, wider relevance, and deeper impact. With shared commitment, academic sincerity, and ethical conviction, we will continue to advance patient-centred care and carry our specialty forward with pride in the years to come.
