In urban Congo, the informal sector plays a significant role in socio-economic development despite its legal ambiguities and social complexities. A mixed-methods approach combining qualitative interviews with quantitative surveys was employed to gather data from urban residents in Congo's major cities. Findings indicate a significant proportion (45%) of urban dwellers operate informally, highlighting the need for comprehensive legal reforms and social support programmes. The study concludes that while existing laws provide some protection, they are often insufficiently enforced, leading to persistent vulnerability among informal sector workers. Policy recommendations include strengthening enforcement mechanisms of existing laws, alongside initiatives aimed at improving working conditions and income security for informal sector workers.
