The rise of generative AI has sparked extensive literature on journalism ethics (Porlezza, 2023; Cools Van den Buck Sørensen, 2020) have analyzed PSM’s integration of core values into personalization systems. Adopting a comparative perspective, this ongoing research examines (1) how PSM embed public service values into the design and implementation of personalization systems; (2) these values’ influence on the design and development of personalization systems, and (3) governance mechanisms ensuring adherence to these values. We conducted semi-structured interviews with project leaders in six European PSMs: French—and Flemish-speaking Belgium, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, and Italian-speaking Switzerland.
