Although Marshall Saunders's novel Beautiful Joe sold a million copies worldwide and she published 25 books in her lifetime, she is only half-remembered by most literature scholars and practically unknown outside academia. To acknowledge her contribution to Canadian literary history, this thesis transcribes and annotates some of the letters in the Marshall Saunders's Collection of the Acadia University Esther Clark Wright Archives. The letters herein transcribed (1894-1906) deal with Marshall Saunders's experiences in having her books published. Many of the letters are from the publishers to Marshall Saunders, but some of her replies are included as well. The letters provide an enlightening glimpse into the publishing business at the turn of the century, but more important is the evidence of Marshall Saunders's achievements. By making the letters accessible, it is hoped that this thesis will make people more aware of Saunders's contribution to Canadian literary history and will contribute to the research of Canadian literature scholars.
