ABSTRACT The generation and interactions of ion‐acoustic (IA) solitary waves are simulated in multicomponent plasmas containing positive and negative ions and electrons following kappa and κ‐deformed Kaniadakis distributions. A Korteweg‐de Vries (KdV) equation that describes IA solitary waves in a multicomponent plasma model is derived. At a critical composition, the KdV equation becomes invalid. Therefore, a modified Korteweg‐de Vries (mKdV) equation describing IA solitary waves in the multicomponent plasmas model is obtained at a critical composition. The Hirota direct method (HDM) is employed to obtain the N‐solitary wave solutions and the phase shifts resulting from overtaking interactions (OIs). Interactions between two IA solitons with identical and opposite polarities during OIs are simulated at discrete time intervals. The present work may help explain the properties of nonlinear waves in the Earth's ionosphere, which support the propagation of solitary waves.
