Preprint v1.4. This paper argues that AI-mediated processes often break chain of custody because no standardized record exists of what the AI did, on what data, and under whose authority. It introduces the Process Authentication Protocol (PAP), an output-side governance framework that restores chain of custody through integrity-protected audit records. The paper develops the conceptual architecture of PAP, including the Compliance Markdown (CMD), audit-log structure, assurance levels, and incentive-compatibility conditions, and illustrates its relevance for public procurement, enterprise governance, and multi-tier supply chains.
