ABSTRACT First Person is a series of interviews with the first authors of a selection of papers published in Journal of Cell Science, helping researchers promote themselves alongside their papers. Gisela Cairo and Muhammad Abdul Haseeb are co-first authors on ‘ MOS is a key regulator of meiotic midbody assembly and prevents abnormal divisions in mouse eggs and their polar bodies’, published in JCS. Gisela is a postdoc in the lab of Carmen Williams at The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Durham, USA, investigating mechanisms regulating meiosis, meiosis-to-mitosis transition and early embryogenesis in mammalian oogenesis, with implications for fertility, chromosome stability and reproductive health. Muhammad Abdul is a postdoc in the lab of Soni Lacefield at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, Hanover, USA, investigating mechanisms that ensure meiotic commitment in mammalian oocytes and prevent premature activation that can lead to germ cell tumor formation.
