A new method for estimating the distance to a source of acoustic signals using a horizontal or vertical antenna is proposed and investigated. The distance is determined at frequencies for which the source at the desired distance is located in the zones of interference maxima of sound pressure. In such zones, the ratio of the “effective phase and group velocities” tends to unity, which allows measuring the distance to the source. In the paper, range estimates for a source located in two zones of acoustic illumination and in the shadow zone are compared for the first time.
