Calotropis is a popular source of medicine across India and has been recognized for both its ability to help heal as well as the fact that it can be very toxic. As such, the plant contains cardenolide cardiac glycosides that are similar to digoxin in their structure and function and can lead to fatal cardiotoxic effects if eaten in excess amounts. The increase in the use of traditional medicine, its easy availability, and a lack of knowledge among people contribute to the increase in Calotropis poisoning especially in rural areas of India. This paper will provide information on the plant's botanical features, toxic compounds, ways it affects the body when it is ingested, signs and symptoms of toxicity, how to diagnose it, and the most current ways to treat it. There is no specific antidote to Calotropis poisoning and early supportive medical care and preventative measures are critical for reducing the risk of death.
