Subject Olympiads serve as a key mechanism for identifying top talent in China. This study tracks the development of Beijing Olympiad winners from 2010 to 2020. Findings reveal a strong concentration in university STEM majors, with increasing subject-major alignment, though biology and chemistry lag behind. Notably, winners who won awards in their early high school years are more likely to obtain doctoral degrees. In the labor market, while most entrants join STEM industries, high-level awardees demonstrate significant career diversification rather than higher STEM retention. The study concludes that while Olympiads effectively guide academic choices, their impact on long-term careers is limited, necessitating improved long-term support systems for sustainable talent development.
