ABSTRACT This article provides an overview of recent developments in the study of revolutions. It briefly reviews the historical development of approaches to revolution, the pre‐scientific approach and the first three generations of theories of revolution. The main part of the article focuses on the current generation of theories and theorists of revolution and the limits of research on revolutions. The article introduces the question of the generational vision of theories of revolution and the current debate about the state of this field of research. It aims to help understand the field of research on revolutions and provide new perspectives on revolutionary change.
