Abstract: This article examines the life of Jakob Vaarask (1862–1936), an Estonian Orthodox priest and agriculturalist, to provide an everyday perspective on the Baltic provinces of the late Russian Empire. Focusing on Vaarask's family life, teaching and clerical careers, landed concerns, intellectual activities and physical mobility, we underscore the opportunities available to individuals for self-fashioning during this period.
