Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) of JAXA has been conducting research activities aimed at creating a new space transportation system utilizing the atmosphere around the earth. One of the measures to utilize the atmosphere is the use of an air breathing engine. We consider installing an air breathing engine on the reusable sounding rocket, which had been studied by ISAS, as a goal of our first step. As the air breathing engine applied to the reusable sounding rocket with vertical takeoff and landing, development study of the “ATRIUM” engine that combines an air turbo engine and a rocket engine is conducted. In order to develop the engine that can actually fly, the development of the flight experimental vehicle into which several technologies including the engine are integrated and the flight experiment with the vehicle to demonstrate the technologies are planned.
