Essential oils are volatile, aromatic, oily liquids obtained from various parts of plants such as leaves, flowers, bark, roots, seeds, fruits, and peels. These oils contain the characteristic fragrance and active constituents of the plant and are therefore referred to as essential oils. They are complex mixtures of naturally occurring chemical compounds including terpenes, terpenoids, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, phenols, esters, and ethers. The composition and quality of essential oils vary depending on the plant species, geographical origin, climatic conditions, harvesting time, and extraction method used. Essential oils have been used since ancient times in traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani for the treatment of various diseases. They have also been used in cosmetics, perfumery, food preservation, and aromatherapy dueto their pleasant aroma and therapeutic properties. With the advancement of modern science, essential oils have gained significant importance in pharmaceutical and biomedical research because of their wide range of biological activities. The extraction of essential oils is commonly carried out using methods such as hydrodistillation, steam distillation, solvent extraction, and microwave-assisted extraction. Among these methods, hydrodistillation using Clevenger apparatus is widely used due to its simplicity, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. The extracted essential oils are evaluated for their physical properties such as color, odor, appearance, refractive index, and specific gravity. Various research studies have demonstrated that essential oils possess significant pharmacological activities such as antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, antioxidant, anti- inflammatory, analgesic, and anticancer activities. These properties make essential oils valuable in the development of pharmaceutical formulations such as ointments, creams, inhalations, and topical preparations. In addition, essential oils are also used in cosmetic products, food industries, and aromatherapy. The present study focuses on the extraction of essential oils from medicinal plants using hydrodistillation method and their evaluation using physical and chemical parameters. The study confirms that essential oils possess significant therapeutic potential and can be used as natural alternatives to synthetic drugs. Thus, essential oils play an important role in pharmaceutical sciences and have great potential in future drug development.
