Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is recognized to have a strong association with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD is recognized as a major cause of liver-related mortality and morbidity. Aims and Objectives: This study aims to study NAFLD in subjects with MetS and to compare them with subjects without MetS. Materials and Methods: This was a hospital-based cross-sectional observational study done on subjects with and without MetS in a tertiary care hospital over a period of 6 months from October 2020 to March 2021. Enrolled subjects underwent ultrasonography, point shear wave elastography (pSWE), fasting blood sugar (F-BSL), postprandial blood sugar, HbA1c, fasting lipid profile, and LFTs. Appropriate statistical tests were applied for analysis and P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean age was 50.98 (standard deviation SD ±14.80) in those without MetS and 50.88 (SD ± 14.46) with MetS. Mean pSWE elasticity was 3.08 kPa (SD ± 1.77) in those without MetS and 6.00 kPa (SD ± 3.86) with MetS. Mean waist circumference was 79.34 cm (SD ± 12.41) in those without MetS and 103.22 cm (SD ± 9.88) with MetS. A substantial association was noted in the occurrence of fibrosis with the presence of MetS and its components ( P < 0.0001). Conclusion: The presence of NAFLD by shear wave elastography was significantly higher in subjects with MetS than in subjects without. It is suggested that eligible subjects with MetS should be screened for the presence of NAFLD to halt the disease progress by early intervention.
