A Fourier parametrization of nuclear shapes and the macroscopic–microscopic method are used to evaluate the potential energy surfaces (PES) of nuclei in a 4-dimensional deformation space. The effect of different orientations in space of the nucleus is taken into account when deformations higher than quadrupole are considered.
