This graphical review consolidates recent progress in carbene and nitrene precursor chemistry by surveying many precursor classes and contextualizing their synthetic accessibility, activation strategies, and representative applications. In addition to mapping the landscape of available precursors, this review aims to bring clarity regarding the species of carbene or nitrene generated by each class of precursor and differentiate the pathways through which the transformations proceed.
