Abstract Expressions for the equivalent conductance and the transference number in terms of time integrals over ion‐ion velocity self‐ and cross‐correlation functions are given. These expressions follow from linear response theory and are well known. Similar expressions for the mutual diffusion coefficient in the system salt/water are given in terms of time integrals over velocity self‐ and cross‐correlation functions of the solute particle which here is a salt molecule. Then it is shown what is the meaning of the concept: the instantaneous velocity of a salt molecule for any degree of dissociation. By the aid of the corresponding equations relations are derived which allow the calculation of time integrals over the cation‐cation, the anion‐anion, and the cation‐anion velocity cross‐correlation function.
