The author studied the mentions and descriptions of astronomical and atmospheric phenomena in written monuments of the 13th–17th centuries. Conclusions were made that for an accurate modern interpretation of the characteristics of these phenomena (color, shine, etc.), the specifics of the language of the original source should be taken into account. The most important factors influencing the interpretation are recognized as the unformed system of functional styles and the peculiarities of the semantics of color names in ancient texts.
