Land off Trent Road, Bulkington, Warwickshire: archaeological evaluation

Archaeological Trial Trench evaluation was carried out following geophysical survey in accordance with CIfA standard and guidance for archaeological field evaluation 2023. The site had been highlighted as an area of archaeological potential, appearing undeveloped since the formation of ridge and furrow. A geophysical survey had been carried out prior to archaeological evaluation; however, the presence of excessive surface debris rendered the results negative. The evaluation trenching took place between 22nd-23rd July 2024 and consisted of six 30m evaluation trenches. Although medieval / post-medieval ridge and furrow is clearly present on LiDAR and aerial photography, no trace of it was present within the trenches. However, two unstratified fragments of 13th century pottery may indicate medieval activity. Two modern features, a probable haul road and compound, likely relating to the construction of the Weston-in-Arden County Junior and Infant School to the east of the site, were the only recorded features. The results of the evaluation conclude that the site was likely agricultural fields from the medieval period onwards with a modern compound located in the south-eastern corner during construction of the school in the late 60s/70s.
