This paper tackles the indirect power control of the grid-following inverter connected to a distributed generation system built on solar photovoltaic. The main task of this inverter is to inject power following a specific reference. This paper thoroughly investigates the performance of indirect power control compared with direct power control in both stationary and rotating frames, using a finite-control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) approach. An improved version of FCS-MPC is employed in this work because it achieves accurate tracking while maintaining fast dynamics. This improvement is exemplified by modifying the objective to compensate for intrinsic delay. The paper highlights the advantages and disadvantages of indirect power control in comparison with direct power control in both stationary and rotating frames. The outcome of this comparative analysis indicates that FCS-MPC-based indirect power control in the stationary frame delivers outstanding power-tracking performance. Furthermore, indirect power control is compared with another efficient optimal control technique, the linear quadratic tracker (LQT), to demonstrate the meritorious performance of the model predictive indirect power control. The experimental results are provided to validate the practicality of the presented control technique.
