This submission is made for the award of DSc to Professor Simon Hall FRSC FHEA in the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, specifically in the focus area of Chemical Sciences. The number of papers submitted is 52. This covering paper groups the research into three themes, and a commentary is given on each theme. A critical review of the current state of knowledge and research in each theme is given, along with how the work presented contributed to the development of each one. In each case, evidence of the candidate’s contribution to, and development of each theme is given by the cited published work. The three themes are: 1. Control of crystal growth at the nanoscale (21 papers) 2. Novel techniques for material synthesis and characterization (19 papers) 3. Control of crystal growth at the macroscale (12 papers)
