CFA Archaeology Ltd were commissioned by Development Property and Land to undertake building recording at No.19 Market Place in Helmsley, North Yorkshire, ahead of a proposal to alter the interior layout and add an additional storey to a late 20th century extension at the western end of the building. No. 19 Market Place comprises two adjoining former late 18th-century domestic properties which are listed grade II. The eastern end of the building operated as a grocer and drapers shop from the start of the 20th century, and since that time the building has formed one property. The building has a prominent location situated at the northern end of the Market Place, making it an important landmark in this popular market town. The building was converted into a bank in the latter part of the 20th century and a basement inserted to house the vault. The building recording has shown that a staircase once existed at the back of the building and the current internal divisions mostly relate to the later use of the building.
