Ketamine can be used safely in neurologically impaired patients under conditions of controlled ventilation, coadministration of a gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor agonist, and avoidance of nitrous oxide. Its beneficial circulatory effects and preclinical data demonstrating neuroprotection merit further animal and patient investigation.
