Abstract

The most extended siege works known in the Near East were recently detected at Hatra. The authors discuss the evidence for and the function of the 25 km of walls and ditches in detail. Reviewing evidence for Roman and Sasanian logistics in war and siege they date the structures to Ardashir’s I conquest in AD 240/1.
