The rare-gas-metal interaction can be described by a pair potential which is solely determined by the properties of the rare-gas atom and the atomic charge density of the metal. The resulting helium-vacancy interaction energies agree well with available experimental data. The helium heats of solution and vacancy trapping energies are predicted for all the 3d elements K-Cu and the trends are discussed.
